Say Bye to BPA

Takepart readers have been the sounding board over the past year for my frustration with the continued widespread use of Bisphenol-A (aka BPA). Despite my consistent nagging about petitioning the government for this toxin to be banned, purchasing non-BPA lined water bottles and telling companies to stop using it, all of you have stuck with me in this fight. BPA is commonly found in the lining of water bottles, aluminum food cans , baby bottles and other products we regularly used. It's a known endocrine-disruptor that has been associated with heart disease, diabetes, sexual dysfunction and liver abnormalities. It has been found in baby bottles, soda bottles and water bottles. Despite your best efforts to avoid BPA, it is found in over 90% of all Americans. Our Canadian friends to the north, however have already figured out that it's dangerous and banned it.

Finally, there's the opportunity for it to be banned in the US. The FDA has undertaken a multi-year review of BPA and will release the results on November 30th. We can only hope that the agency will do the right thing upon the release of its report and ban BPA. However, this is a government agency that seems to prioritize businesses over citizen interests. Tell the FDA once and for all to ban BPA from all consumer products. You won't have to hear from me anymore about BPA and we can all shift our energies to banning another toxin. Stay tuned....
